Celebrating Women, Yesterday and Today
I love Women’s History Month. Not that I’m not always thinking about the amazing thing women have accomplished, but I especially love Women’s History Month because it gives the world the chance to hear more of those stories--stories that often aren’t given enough airplay.
Take, for example, Madam C.J. Walker (nee Sarah Breedlove), an African-American entrepreneur who developed and marketed a wildly successful line of beauty and hair products for black women. This took place, mind you, around the turn of the 20th century—before women were even granted the right to vote. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Walker was the first woman to become a millionaire based on her own achievements.
Walker reminds me of another African American beauty mogul—Lisa Price, the founder of the $30 million dollar Carol’s Daughter (www.carolsdaughter.com), which she started in her garage back in 1993.
Price, I am thrilled to report, will be the keynote speaker at our first “M3 1000” event in Denver on April 4, where 250 women will have the chance to pitch their businesses to our expert panel. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to make history by helping 1000 women business owners hit the million dollar mark. Come join, me, Lisa Price, and other fantastic women by signing up -- you have until March 28 for the Denver event, which will be held at the Denver Marriott City Center. (More details can be found at www.makemineamillion.org.) If you can’t make that, we’ll have other events later this year in Philadelphia, New York and other cities.
I look forward to making history with you!
